Suneel Ram, a 26-year-old Western New York resident who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD,) has released an inspirational book he co-wrote with Anthony E. Zuiker, the famed creator of the "CSI" television series. The book strives to help educate young people and build awareness of the genetic disease, and how it drastically impacts the lives of those living with the condition.
Niagara University women's studies writing awards program honors 3 students

Three students were honored during Niagara University's annual women's studies program writing contest at a ceremony on March 9 in Dunleavy Hall on the Niagara University campus. Established in 2004, the award program recognizes students for work that examines gender, sexuality, race and other diversity-related topics.

Congressman Brian Higgins joined Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent Mark Laurrie on Friday to announce a five-year grant totaling close to $3.5 million. Awarded by the U.S. Department of Education and funded by the School-Based Mental Health Services program, the grant will be used to support school and community mental health programs while creating opportunities for local graduate students.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection urges parents and caregivers to pay attention to product recalls. In January, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which issues product recalls across all categories of consumer goods, reissued earlier recalls for two inclined sleep products after additional infant deaths were reported. Inclined sleepers are dangerous for babies and increase the risk of suffocation.
Niagara University cuts ribbon on renovated Kiernan Center

Niagara University celebrated the completion of an $11.5 million renovation project at its Kiernan Recreation Center on Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. NYS: $28 million in federal funding to help students prepare for college

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state was awarded a $28 million, seven-year Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase college and career readiness for more than 6,200 low-income New York state students. The GEAR UP program will help New York students attending high-poverty middle and high schools prepare for and succeed in college.

NIH awards major grant to UB to boost newborn screening accuracy

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a University at Buffalo researcher an extremely competitive grant known as an R01 grant to lead an international effort to dramatically improve the accuracy of newborn screening for three rare, often fatal, genetic diseases. The five-year, $3.8 million grant is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the NIH.
