Artpark's "Tuesdays in the Park" concert this week was definitely weird. Not weird as in strange, but weird as in Al Yankovic. He brought his "Strings Attached" tour to Lewiston - complete with a top-notch backing band, a 41-piece orchestra, numerous video packages, and, of course, unique costume changes.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the completion of the restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed landscape on the estate of the Darwin D. Martin House, the final component of the overall restoration effort that has spanned more than two decades and received more than $50 million in investments in the National Historic Landmark and New York State Historic Site.

Coming Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4, Gratwick Riverside Park in North Tonawanda will host the 14th Thunder on the Niagara boat racing event.

The Breast Cancer Network of WNY (BCN), in collaboration with the Buffalo Bisons and Amherst Federal Credit Union, will present the third annual "Strike Out Breast Cancer" event on Saturday, Aug. 3. This family-friendly event includes a two-hour pre-game party downtown at Cathedral Park, a short breast cancer awareness walk to Sahlen Field, and admission to that evening's Buffalo Bisons baseball game.

A smaller but peppier Artpark crowd was treated to the most fun concert of the 2019 "Tuesdays in the Park" concert series this week. Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra and Emerson Hart of Tonic had people on their feet, singing and dancing along to some of the 1990's biggest hits.

That massive complex - 600 River Road Apartments - was welcomed to the North Tonawanda community Tuesday at a ribbon-cutting held at the facility.

Though rains threatened to spoil the party, Artpark & Company's "Free Family Saturdays" kicked off in fine fashion over the weekend. In fact, children and parents dodged some drops and came out early to make slime, a colorful mask or play with an assortment of toys atop a sandy hill.

By 1973, NCCC had moved to its permanent location to Sanborn, at the intersection of Route 31 (Saunders Settlement Road) and Route 429 (Townline Road).

Poloncarz was joined Monday by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz, Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan, and President of the Erie County Chiefs of Police Association Greg Wickett to provide an update on driving while intoxicated arrests in Erie County in 2019. Their goal also was to promote safe driving around Fourth of July weekend.

It was a big night of music Tuesday at Artpark, as the Lewiston venue presented a bill with Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, John Lodge of The Moody Blues with guest vocalist Arthur Brown, Asia and YES. The "Royal Affair Tour" offered fast-paced set changes, but laid-back rock music, which led to a larger audience pop than in past weeks.

Artpark & Company's first Strawberry Moon Festival served as a means to educate the community on the Tuscarora and Cayuga nations through Native American singing, dancing, crafts, fare and even a parade. Culture and customs were defined, explained and then presented to hundreds of onlookers - onlookers who were invited to become participants.

The Discover Niagara Shuttle kicked off its fourth season last month, connecting riders to 17 destination sites along a 14-mile route from Niagara Falls to Fort Niagara. Overseen by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA), the free hop-on, hop-off service has serviced over 105,000 riders from across the globe since its inception in 2016.

Anthropology students from SUNY Buffalo State College are spending time at Old Fort Niagara this month. They are participating in an archaeological field school that is actively excavating Building 428, a barracks spanning the years 1756-1813 near the North Redoubt. Built by the French in 1756, it disappears from maps and plans in 1814 without records of why or how. The barracks housed soldiers while they were garrisoned at the fort.

In honor of National Flag Day, Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski presented a flag-raising ceremony on Friday, unveiling three new flagpoles in which U.S. military veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East raised the American, state and county flags in front of the county courthouse.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday hosted the first meeting of community leaders and the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Commission, where he announced up to $300 million in funding available for communities impacted by Lake Ontario flooding. Local governments will match 15% for every dollar the state spends.

Artpark & Company's annual "Fairy House Festival" offered a flurry of activities designed for all age groups. In fact, in each corner of the lower park area - where the event returned this year - one could find some new activity or sight. Throughout the afternoon, children and families dressed up, made fairy houses, concocted potions, visited the tea house, listened to music - made music in the interactive instrument garden - danced with costumed characters, picnicked and played games.

Before his concert at Artpark on Tuesday, June 4, musician Sammy Hagar presented a check of $2,500 to Heart, Love & Soul and Community Missions Inc. in support of their food services for the less-fortunate. The donation was made by the Hagar Family Foundation, as it is done at every stop Hagar makes on his current Sammy Hagar and The Circle Tour.
