Lewiston No. 1 quick to prevent loss on Center Street

Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. and local first-responders were on site at the 500 block of Center Street before 10:30 a.m. Saturday, responding to a call of sparks, fraying and smoke coming from a basement electrical panel. The building's ground level is home to Cool Smiles (dental office of Dr. Anthony DeLuke), Chéri Amour, Salon Jule and Antique to Chic.

The Village of Lewiston's crown jewel has a new owner - one who has yet to be identified. Over the weekend, the Hastings family - Richard, his wife, Judy, and son, Alan - reached an agreement to sell the Frontier House and almost one acre of property for $800,000. The deal was represented by Dian Ruta, a licensed associate broker with Great Lakes Real Estate Inc.

The United Way of Greater Niagara received a check for $1,829 from General Motors Plant in Lockport to be sent to Puerto Rico to assist the victims of Hurricane Maria. UWGN reached out to Fondos Unidos of San Juan (United Way of San Juan) in Puerto Rico to benefit from these funds and distribute them in the community after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

A group of dedicated Historical Association of Lewiston volunteers were out in force Saturday to wash and wax Lewiston's two landmark statues: the Freedom Crossing Monument on the waterfront, and the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at Portage Road and Center Street. The volunteers perform the annual maintenance to preserve the luster and quality of the bronze sculptures.

Poloncarz was joined Monday by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz, Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan, and Chief of the Orchard Park Police Department Mark Pacholec to review driving while intoxicated incidents during the summer months across Erie County. Data from the STOP-DWI office indicates DWI arrests for the period of July 3 through Sept. 17 are down from last year.
'Invest in a Vest': Safety equipment arrives for Lewiston police officers

The Lewiston Police Department announced Monday it is in receipt of 24 new tactical ballistic vests. Each vest contains a metal plate, weighs close to 30 pounds, and is rated level IV, which is the highest level of protective gear.
