Lewiston residents seek answers on Oxford House

Rows of extra chairs were wheeled into the Morgan Lewis Village Boardroom on Monday night to accommodate the large number of residents who filed into the Red Brick to learn more about an "Oxford House" on Creek Road Extension. After about a half-hour of civil discourse at the monthly board meeting, residents were told the group home is legal. Furthermore, the occupants can function as they have since the local program was established last September.

Old Fort Niagara's busy season of re-enactments continues with "Soldiers of the Revolution," Aug. 18-19, when the fort's staff and volunteers will work with visiting re-enacting units to share history from the American Revolution on the Niagara Frontier. During this event, visitors will gain an understanding of early America through the perspectives of the colonial rebels versus those who remained loyal to the British crown, called loyalists.
Como Deli coming to Center Street

One of the most iconic restaurant businesses in Western New York is set to make its Lewiston debut later this year. The Como Restaurant will open up a deli at the corner of Center and South Sixth streets, inside what used to be Melloni's Meats and, most recently, Cal's Grinders. The Village of Lewiston location will be operated by the Antonacci and Colucci families.

Silo Restaurant to discontinue 2% fee

A surcharge that drew the ire of some Village of Lewiston residents has been permanently removed. Late Wednesday afternoon, The Silo Restaurant proprietor Alan Hastings said his business will stop charging customers a 2 percent fee that was initiated when the 2018 season began in May.
Jacobs secures $50,000 to launch high school program to fight heroin epidemic

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs on Wednesday announced he secured $50,000 in state funds to support the implementation of a high school student ambassador program in the City of Buffalo. Developed by the Independent Health Foundation and Western New York United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse, the pilot program is patterned after the successful Leadership in Training (LIT) middle school program.

Earlier this week, New York state released the tourism economics research study for 2017, which provides analyses on the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2017 reached $708,276,000, which is an increase of 8.8 percent over 2016.

Pro Neil Farlow of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, won the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Erie presented by Polaris with a single-day catch of five bass weighing 24 pounds, 4 ounces, after high winds forced tournament officials to shorten the three-day event to one day of competition. Farlow's weight was caught on Thursday and was enough to earn him the top prize of $87,500, including a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower outboard engine.
Village of Lewiston: Frontier House scans to give detailed blueprint of building

Niagara Boundary and Mapping Services President Kenneth Lee Slaugenhoupt spent part of the past week laser-scanning the Frontier House. Working inside and outside the building, he used a FARO Laser Scanner, which, he said, is capable of collecting 488,000 measurements per minute with a tolerance of ±3mm (or 1/8 inch).

DEC: Help prevent wildland fires

New York forest rangers responded to several smaller wildland fires during the past week. These were either the result of careless campfires or lightning strikes. Due to the dry conditions that prevail throughout most of the state, forest rangers remind people to be careful with fires or ignition devices. It is unlawful to leave a campfire unattended or unextinguished, and to set any fire that may endanger the property of another.
