The New York State Gaming Commission, New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports and New York Council on Problem Gambling - which together comprise New York's Responsible Play Partnership (RPP) - came together Thursday with executive management at Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel to discuss steps being taken to address problem gambling.
Diesel prices hit record high

Diesel fuel prices at the local, state and national levels have reached a new high today. Today's national average price for a gallon of diesel is $5.51, up $2.41 from one year ago when the price was $3.10. In New York, the average price for diesel is $6.32, up $3.14 from one year ago when the price was $3.18.
Village of Lewiston seeks input on digital sign proposal

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston will hold a public information session at 6 p.m. Monday, May 16, to discuss the viability of adding a digital information sign at the corner of Center Street and Portage Road. Andres says warehouse proposal should be approved

Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres, chairman of the county's Economic Development Committee, on Tuesday said the proposed site for the new warehouse project (of which Amazon is the potential tenant) was deemed shovel-ready by Empire State Development a decade ago and, as such, the project absolutely needs to be approved if the county wants to maintain credibility with national and international site selectors.

DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up 21% in first quarter of 2022

Local government sales tax collections grew by 21.1%, or $901 million, in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Collections for the three-month period totaled nearly $5.2 billion, with growth at least partially driven by inflation, which hit a 40-year-high in March.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.
