MENTOR New York, a leader in the statewide mentoring movement, will convene New York's youth development and mentoring professionals virtually for the 18th annual Mentoring Matters Conference on Friday, April 16, to address increasing racial equity and creating spaces of joy for young people.

Hospitality icon Russell J. Salvatore made a surprise donation to the Pembroke High School Dragons varsity girls basketball team, coach Ronald Funke, and "Shoot For The Cure" event organizer and special education teacher Michael Wilson on Thursday. Salvatore presented a check for $6,000, bringing the "Shooting For A Cure!" to a 10-year goal of $200,000, supporting research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

New York Sea Grant, in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, announced funding is available for projects that engage youth under the age of 21 and address local watershed challenges and New York's Great Lakes Action Agenda priorities. A total of $200,000 - up to $25,000 per project - in New York Great Lakes Basin Small Grants will be awarded.

The Youngstown Free Library and the Friends of the Library are offering the Ruby Carey Memorial Scholarship to high school seniors who reside in the 14174 area postal code. The scholarship is designed to assist deserving students purchase textbooks and other educational materials in pursuit of higher education. The award of $1,500 will be presented to the winner upon entering college, and their name will be inscribed on the plaque in the Youngstown Library.

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program to support Western New York-area high school seniors aspiring to careers in the foodservice and hospitality industries. This year's program will award four recipients with a $500 scholarship to be applied toward nontuition expenses, such as room, board, books and fees.

On Tuesday at the Larkin Commerce Center, 35 Buffalo Police Department recruits from the Buffalo Police Explorers (BPE) took their oath led by Buffalo Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood. Officers from the BPD and other dignitaries from the law enforcement community attended the ceremony.

Assemblyman Angelo Morinello is commending state education officials for their decision to cancel Regents exams that are not federally required. Officials approved the move on Monday following unanimous support from educators, including NYSUT. Morinello vocally opposed the federal government decision to hold any standardized testing this school year due to the multitude of challenges and inconsistencies within school districts during the pandemic.

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops Friendly Markets is inviting local artists (students and the general public alike) to capture its essence in art by entering in the 2021 poster art contest. This year's festival, taking place July 10-11, will be back as a live event and is planned to take place in Niagara Square and on a portion of Delaware Avenue. This year's event will be modified to comply with any COVID-19 restrictions that may still be in place in July.

Bishop Michael J. Fisher announced appointment of Dr. Tim Uhl as the new superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Buffalo, a position he will take up on April 19. Since 2014, Uhl has been the superintendent for the Montana Catholic Schools, which includes 23 schools of both the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings and the Diocese of Helena.

Dr. Carrie Teresa Isard, chair and associate professor of communication studies at Niagara University, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Klein-Carnell Rising Scholar Award. The new honor recognizes a graduate of Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication whose scholarly achievements within the first seven years since graduation indicate promise of a major research career in any field relevant to communication or media.
