Cardinal O'Hara High School in the Town of Tonawanda decided to show its appreciation of its teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week with thank you sign put up at the entry to the school on Monday. The tribute was put up to show teachers how much they mean to the students and to honor all the hard work they accomplished in the pandemic.

The Niagara Wheatfield High School Alumni Committee announced the multiclass reunion previously scheduled for August has been canceled due to the pandemic. Plans are being made for a reunion to be held Aug. 21, 2022.

Since our last edition, things have really progressed on a number of fronts: The state budget was finalized in Albany, and new guidance was (finally) released by the New York State Department of Health, aligning to the updated guidance from the CDC related to social distancing in schools. We have moved quickly to advance both the 2021-22 budget and plans to return students to campus under the new guidance.

On April 9, Arbor Capital Management donated 500 packages of Girl Scout cookies to The Hometown Heroes Project through the Girl Scouts of Western New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced New York state will provide a new, separate allocation of 35,000 vaccines to address the college student population at SUNY schools and private colleges. This initial allocation will include 21,000 vaccines to be administered to SUNY students and 14,000 vaccines to be administered at private colleges. The vaccines will be administered to residential and non-commuter students who are leaving for the summer.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt schooling and everyday life for families throughout our region, officials at the Child Advocacy Center at BestSelf (CAC) caution that cases of child abuse may continue to go unreported. At-risk children have been learning remotely at least part-time, without educators and other professionals who commonly recognize the signs of abuse and report it.

Canisius College received a $4,398,329 million Higher Education Capital Matching Grant (HECap) from New York. The grant will help fund the construction of classrooms and laboratory facilities on the second level of Science Hall, the college's interdisciplinary science center.
