Erie County recently chose to abandon its strict guidelines concerning quarantining in favor of New York State Department of Health guidelines, according to School Superintendent Brian Graham, who spoke at the Sept. 27 meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday issued a proclamation declaring September as "Campus Fire Safety Month," which aims to educate the public about the dangers of campus-related housing fires across New York. With many of the state's colleges and universities beginning classes over the past two weeks, Hochul urged New Yorkers - especially students and renters - to take in their surroundings and evaluate their residences for fire safety measures.

CollegeBoard estimates this change saves students and their families an average of $1,240 in out-of-pocket costs per year. The Office of Head Start (OHS) has awarded the Community Action Organization of WNY Inc. a $77.1 million grant over five years to provide Head Start and Early Head Start programming to 1,080 Head Start students and 205 infants, toddlers and pregnant women in Erie County. Holy Cross Head Start Inc., formerly a delegate of CAO since 1969, was also awarded a portion of the Erie County grant and will now serve the community as a Grantee agency alongside CAO. Holy Cross was awarded $25 million over five years, serving 500 Head Start children.

Students in Niagara University's introduction to criminal justice course assisted the university's Border Community Service program to place hundreds of American flags on the front lawn of the campus to commemorate the lives of the victims lost during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The project was done in preparation for the university's 9/11 remembrance ceremony, which will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.
