Junior Achievement of Western New York (JA) announced via a series of video recordings on Facebook that it raised $126,118 through the 36th annual JA Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser. A total of 1,132 individuals, representing 50 local companies, raised funds for JA's financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career and work readiness programs, taught by volunteers in WNY schools. Bank of America has been the title sponsor of the JA Bowl-A-Thon for the past 35 years.

Governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory on June 25 that requires all individuals traveling from states with significant community transmission of COVID-19 to remain under quarantine for a period of 14 days. As of June 30, those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Independence Day is almost here and many travelers whose plans have been altered due to the impact of COVID-19 may be looking for local destinations to quench their pent-up desire to travel. AAA's travel forecast was released last week (June 25) and predicted road trips are the summer travel trend this year with motorists making up 97% of all summer travel.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced eight additional states meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those states - all of which have significant community spread - to quarantine for 14 days. The newly added states are California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Tennessee. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through a partnership with the Great Lakes Commission and Buffalo Urban Development Corp., in collaboration with the City of Buffalo, NYSDEC, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper and the Wilson Foundation, has authorized a request to provide $1,056,914 in federal funding toward the project transforming Buffalo's Ralph C. This will allow veterans who were denied an honorable discharge because of their sexual orientation or gender identity to have their New York state veterans' benefits restored.

The Aquarium of Niagara is preparing to end its COVID-19-related closure this week, as Western New York enters phase four of the "New York Forward" reopening plan. The venue will officially open to the general public on Saturday, July 4, with summer operating hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On Wednesday, July 1, the Niagara Small Business Development Center and speaker Shieke Sharpe, certified public accountant and certified fraud examiner, will present two live webinars covering the recent changes to the Paycheck Protection Program. These webinars will also include an overview of the revised PPP forgiveness application and the new short form. Sharpe will review both forms, step by step, and help attendees determine which form is right for their business. There also will be time for Q&A.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced additional DEC campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill parks will open on July 1 to existing reservation holders for the 2020 season. To maintain social distancing and reduce the density of facilities and protect visitors, DEC is not accepting additional reservations or walk-in camping for the 2020 season at this time. Only existing reservations for all DEC campgrounds will be honored. Visit DEC's website for the latest updates on DEC campgrounds and information about each facility.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for its first inaugural class this fall. The academy will be a part of SUNY Empire State College, where its programs were developed by faculty and staff. The mission of the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is to prepare women for executive and board positions, and to work with organizations across New York to improve their gender representation. The governor first proposed the creation of the academy in his State of the State agenda.
