Perry's Ice Cream lends support to Parkinson's Foundation

The Parkinson's Foundation recently received a nearly $4,000 donation from Perry's Ice Cream. The monies were raised through the company's "Community Returns" program, which engages employees in a variety of raffles, games and product sales over a six-month period, helping to accrue donation funds.

Family Promise of Western New York, an emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has broken ground on critical upgrades to its shelter facility, which will allow the program to double in capacity. UB receives $800,000 NSF/Amazon grant to improve AI fairness in foster care

A multidisciplinary University at Buffalo research team has received an $800,000 grant to develop a machine learning system that could eventually help caseworkers and human services agencies determine the best available services for the more than 20,000 youth who annually age out of foster care without rejoining their families.

Association of Film Commissioners International names Tim Clark chairman

The Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) announced Tim Clark, film commissioner for the Buffalo Niagara Film Office, will serve as AFCI's first newly elected board chair since 2016. Clark joined the AFCI board in 2018 and served previously as second vice chair. His new tenure as chair is set for a two-year term that may be renewed in 2022.

House of Representatives Cancer Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, is advocating for a significant increase in the nation's investment in medical research and hopes initiatives to advance better treatments are included in the State of the Union address taking place today (also World Cancer Day). Higgins said he also hopes to see additional funding for research included in the president's 2021 budget scheduled for release next week.

'The Art of Suffrage' exhibit coming to Kenan Center

"The Art of Suffrage" exhibit will be on display at the Kenan Center in Lockport from Feb. 9 to March 29. The multimedia exhibit celebrates the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment's ratification with artifacts from the collection of local activist Mary Brennan Taylor as the centerpiece. The collection includes ephemera such as magazines, buttons, post cards, sheet music and more from the 72-year period when trailblazing suffragists fought for their right to vote.
DEC: Oneida Lake adult walleye population hits 1 million fish

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced anglers have at least 1 million reasons to fish for walleye in Oneida Lake, according to a study with Cornell University researchers who have been tracking the lake's walleye population for more than 60 years. The population of adult walleye was estimated to be 1 million fish in 2019, a level that has not been reached since the 1980s.

South Beach brought the heat as an average audience of 102.1 million tuned in for FOX Sports' ninth Super Bowl presentation as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers (31-20) in Super Bowl LIV at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. The FOX broadcast network, including connected TV platforms, drew an average audience of 99.9 million viewership peaking at 103.5 million in the exciting conclusion to the NFL's 100th season.

March of Dimes receives $200,000 grant from Health Foundation for Western & Central New York

March of Dimes, the leader in the fight for the health of all moms and babies, recently announced its latest collaboration with the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York aimed at reducing preterm births and improving maternal and infant health in Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Syracuse. The agency said premature birth is the largest contributor to infant death in the U.S., and pregnancy-related death has more than doubled over the past 25 years.

Lewiston No. 1, first-responders fight back multi-dwelling structure fire

At 10:33 p.m. Saturday, Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 was dispatched to the Woods at Blairville apartment complex in the 800 block of Oriole Lane for a reported structure fire. Crews were faced with heavy fire in two apartments upon arrival and immediately deployed to begin knocking back the flames as additional crews entered to search for anyone still inside.
