Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 34-year-old William A. Fugate of Buffalo was sentenced yesterday afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio to 3 1/2 to 7 years in prison. He was sentenced yesterday as a second felony offender.

The James E. Strates Shows will again head to the Erie County Fair this August, commemorating 100 years in business and a "Centennial of Smiles." Strates Shows will bring over 70 rides, games and attractions to complete the mile-long midway in Hamburg.

The Grand Island Memorial Library is planning to add a reading garden to the grassy area next to the building that faces the parking lot. The library will be called the Richard Earne Memorial Reading Garden, as a tribute to the late Richard Earne, who was a member of the Grand Island Rotary Club, as well as a member of the library board of trustees. He died on Sept. 18, 2022.

Western New York Healthcare System announced that it has received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This is the first time CMS has included VA facilities in its annual Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

On Tuesday, the Buffalo City Mission and Lloyd Taco Truck hosted the 10th annual "Christmas in July Luncheon" at the Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise. The event provided nearly 200 meals, which were given to the men's ministry at the Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise and the women's ministry located at Buffalo City Mission's Cornerstone Manor. All meals were donated in full by Lloyd Taco Truck.

Buffalo Waterfront Management Group (BWMG) announced roller-skating will return Friday, Aug. 11. In addition to regular, daily hours of operation, the Roller Rink at Canalside will again offer its popular group skate and party packages. The site will also host an activity zone with pop-up games, activities and a party tent.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Erie County Office for People with Disabilities (ECOPD) was added to the county charter a full seven years earlier in 1983.

Erie County Medical Center has again been recognized by the Lown Institute for outstanding social responsibility, receiving an "A" grade on the 2023-24 Lown Institute Hospitals Index. ECMC achieved this honor through strong performance across metrics of health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care, out of more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide.

After a decade-long hiatus, the Erie County Department of Health has reintroduced the Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) program within the office of health equity. This free resource and referral program will improve care coordination for infants, children and youth from birth to 21 years old who have a serious or chronic medical, physical, behavioral, emotional or developmental condition.

Elsie Martino has been the humble, dedicated volunteer secretary of the DeGlopper Memorial Expansion Committee since the fall of 2018.
