New York state requests $1.6 billion in additional federal funding for emergency rental assistance

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced New York state requested an additional $1.6 billion from the U.S. Treasury Department to help fulfill the significant unmet need among struggling tenants and landlords who have applied for Emergency Rental Assistance.

Niagara County Central Rotary Club offering student scholarships

The Niagara County Central Rotary Club will award three $500 scholarships to students in the Niagara Wheatfield, Starpoint and Wilson school districts. Eligible students must be entering college in the fall of 2022. Applications are due March 7. Interviews will be scheduled via zoom the evening of March 30.

DEC announces closure of all target shooting activity at Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Thursday announced that, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 1, target shooting will be prohibited at Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area (WMA), located in DEC's regions 8 and 9. The closure will bring the WMA into compliance with recently adopted regulations for WMAs statewide that prohibit target shooting.

The Niagara County Department of Public Works on Thursday announced Tom Yeager, the longtime PGA golf pro at the Niagara County Golf Course in Lockport, will be retiring after two decades working for Niagara County and more than 40 years in the golf profession. Yeager's retirement is official on March 18.

Structure fire on Cory Drive in Wheatfield

On Friday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 2040 Cory Drive, in the Town of Wheatfield. NCSO deputies responded with members of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Sanborn Volunteer Fire Co. and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Responding personnel observed large amounts of black smoke and visible flames coming from the building.
Sentencing in Mandy Steingasser murder case

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced Friday that Joseph H. Belstadt, after being convicted of the 1993 murder of Mandy Steingasser, was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison, by the Hon. Michael Mohun.
