On Friday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 2040 Cory Drive, in the Town of Wheatfield. NCSO deputies responded with members of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Sanborn Volunteer Fire Co. and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Responding personnel observed large amounts of black smoke and visible flames coming from the building.

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced Friday that Joseph H. Belstadt, after being convicted of the 1993 murder of Mandy Steingasser, was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison, by the Hon. Michael Mohun.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Monday reminded pistol permitholders that, under the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE) of Jan. 15, 2013, they must recertify every five years with the New York State Police. That means those who either received their permit or recertified in 2017 must now recertify by the date of issuance on their permit.

On Thursday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a telephone call reporting a house fire at 6030 Hoover Road in the Town of Wheatfield. When responding patrol units arrived on scene, all occupants had been evacuated, and the Sanborn Fire Co. was in the process of extinguishing the fire.

On Monday, the Wheatfield Town board announced that, although the municipality elected not to opt out of New York State Cannabis Law Section 131 - which would have flatly prevented marijuana retail sales and on-site consumption establishments from operating - due to a lack of specifics from the state. It will go forward with its own regulations regarding where and how such establishments could operate.
