The Niagara County Department of Health is working closely with the three local hospitals, its mental health and substance abuse department, and community partners - forming the Niagara County Community Health Workgroup - to "identify priority areas to build a plan to improve the health of our communities." The workgroup is conducting a collaborative community health assessment to understand the health needs and concerns of the local communities.

Niagara County Community College and Niagara Falls City Schools were part of the statewide "Women's Empowerment Draft" throughout the month of March. The two schools joined 24 other colleges and 30 grade schools to collectively celebrate Women's History Month. The program, created by Alfred University's Art Force 5, uses a pro-sports theme to build enthusiasm for historic icons.

Health information management vendor identifies and addresses email security incident

Ciox Health, a company that provides health information management services to providers and insurers across the U.S., is working with its customers, including Catholic Health, to notify patients whose information may have been part of an incident involving unauthorized access to a Ciox employee's email account. About 1,300 hospital and primary care patients in Catholic Health are affected and will be receiving a letter from Ciox in the coming days.

New York Power Authority fishing facilities including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant will open for the season Friday, April 1, weather and water levels permitting. While discussing potential candidates, the committee said it was important to "find an individual who truly encapsulates the spirit of Dyngus Day. After a great deal of deliberation, there was really only one person who fit the bill, and his name is 'Bozo.' "
Community Missions celebrates 25th annual Sweetheart Dinner

Community Missions will hold its 25th annual Sweetheart Dinner, presented by United Healthcare, on Friday, April 1, at Sheraton Niagara Falls. Vietnam Veterans Chapter 268 donates $20,000 to new NCCC Veterans Memorial Park

Members of the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 268 attended the Niagara County Community College's board of trustees meeting on Tuesday. The chapter, founded in 1985, has donated more than $180,000 to the Niagara County community - including scholarships to high school graduates to attend college.

COVID cases tick up in Erie, Niagara counties

The number of reported coronavirus cases in Erie and Niagara counties has gone up for the first time in several weeks. As of Wednesday, the seven-day average of cases per a population of 100,000 was 8.25%. The seven-day average percentage of positive test results reported over the past three days was 1.86%. One week ago, those numbers were 6.82% and 1.79%, respectively.

NYSDOT announces start of $2.9 million project to upgrade culverts in Western New York

Residential fire in Wheatfield

On March 22 at 2:52 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received notification of a fire alarm activation at the apartment building located at 6824 Plaza Drive in the Town of Wheatfield. A second call received a short time later reported smoke showing on the first floor of the three-floor structure.
