Niagara Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Thursday announced the Niagara County Department of Motor Vehicles offices in North Tonawanda and Lockport will be open for in-person transactions for Niagara County residents only beginning Monday, June 22. In-person transactions are by appointment only. Residents can begin scheduling their appointments as of 9 a.m. Friday.

Niagara County will open one playground area in each of Krull, Oppenheim and West Canal parks on Friday, and will open the rest of the playground areas next Friday, Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh said. Splash pads at Krull and Oppenheim are set to open by the end of June.

People looking for work are invited to interview for temporary and permanent direct care positions at Empower. The not-for-profit organization is looking for additional help to support people with disabilities living in sites in Niagara Falls, Lewiston, the Town of Niagara, Sanborn and Lockport. Open interviews will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Empower's administrative offices, 9812 Lockport Road, Town of Niagara.

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is holding a curbside Chiavetta's chicken dinner pickup from 3-7 p.m. Friday, June 26. Dinners are $12 each in advance, and include the famous Chiavetta's chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and a roll. A portion of each dinner sold will help the museum to make up lost admissions income from the three months the museum was required to close due to COVID-19.

Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres on Tuesday announced the Niagara County Department of Emergency Services has goggles available for hair salons and barbershops to help them meet the state reopening guidelines. Andres said the guidelines initially required face shields, but now have been amended by New York state to include goggles.

The Niagara County Community College Foundation office has continued to work tirelessly to raise funds for our students who are struggling with financial hardships caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. As of June 5, the NCCC Foundation has raised $15,000 to support 150 current students. Each student has received a $100 gift card to help purchase groceries, medicine and other basic necessities.

The History Center of Niagara will begin to open its doors to the public starting with the Outwater Emporium Gift Shop, 215 Niagara St., Lockport. In-store sales will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 10. The second floor will be closed to the public at present.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education on Monday held a virtual public hearing on Zoom regarding the proposed $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year. While the figures represent a 3.66% increase from last year, the board said most of that will be paid through reserves the district has on hand. The board also discussed plans to continue its popular grab-and-go food service through the end of June, and weighed in on whether the district should continue the program throughout the summer.

With the Niagara-Wheatfield School Board election set to take place on Tuesday, June 9, candidates were given the opportunity to briefly speak to residents about their platforms and qualifications. In total, there are five candidates looking to fill three seats. Two of those seats are held by incumbents Darren Sneed and Jason Myers who are seeking reelection. The third is being vacated by board member Gina Terbot who will not seek reelection after serving on the board for six years.
