Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced construction has begun on a $500,000 resiliency project awarded under the Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. This project will address a badly deteriorated steel waterline that has been identified as at-risk. The Town of Wilson owns and operates the local water supply system, serving the approximately 5,800 residents.

Niagara County legislators Rich Andres, Randy Bradt and Jesse Gooch on Friday joined Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton in announcing Niagara County will be relocating its COVID-19 vaccination point-of-dispensing (POD) clinic from the Kenan Arena in Lockport to Gratwick Fire Hose Co. No. 6 in North Tonawanda beginning the second week in March.

As I scrolled the internet a few weeks ago I came across something that sparked my interest, something going on at the Rath Building in Erie County. A group called WNY Students First had organized a rally promoting their mission of getting kids back in school five days a week. I thought to myself, "Wow, I may not be the only person that seems upset at the current system. I may not be the only parent that has watched my children's mental health deteriorate; watched them struggle in general to find happiness in today's world; or witnessed those circles under their eyes growing larger and darker."

Recent comments indicate that Cayuga Street will become a designated bike path, and new signs will be added to help bicyclists find their way to Center Street, just one short block away. At a time when residents are begging local officials to clean up the sign clutter, adding more signs is the exact opposite of what this community wants and needs.

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that, beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, March 1, the Route 93 bridge over Twelve Mile Creek in the Town of Porter will be closed to traffic, as the replacement of the bridge gets underway. Passenger vehicles will be directed to follow a posted detour along Dickersonville, Braley and Porter Center roads. Truck traffic will be directed to follow a truck detour along NY routes 18 and 425.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Tuesday announced a new cooperative agreement with the state comptroller's office; Niagara County; Orleans County; the cities of Lockport, Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda; and the Niagara Orleans Regional Land Improvement Corp. (NORLIC) to promote the redevelopment of dozens of potentially contaminated properties in Niagara and Orleans counties.

Catholic Health has contracted to purchase 104 acres of land in Lockport, which will be the site of the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. The multiple parcels, located off South Transit Road between Shimer and Ruhlmann roads, are currently under environmental and zoning review. Access to the hospital campus will be off Shimer Road near Transit.

On Feb. 6 at 10:14 hours, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting an accident on the sledding hill at the Clyde L. Burmaster Park in the Town of Lewiston. Responding members of the Town of Lewiston Police Department and Niagara County Sheriff's Office located and confirmed two injured parties, a 16-year-old female and a 3-year-old male. The two were apparently riding a sledding tube when they struck a tree at the bottom of the hill.
