The first full week of January 2014 was a wild one as the much-anticipated polar vortex descended into Western New York. Weather conditions ranged from very heavy lake effect snows and blizzards in the Buffalo area to extreme cold, winds, ice and river shore flooding in Niagara County.

Congressman Brian Higgins is writing to the U.S. chair of the International Joint Commission calling for an investigation into what led to an ice jam buildup and flooding along the Niagara River during the blizzard that hit the Western New York area. Higgins' request is aimed at preventing potential tragedies in the future.

On the heels of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's announcement of a multibillion-dollar infrastructure improvement plan for the new York, State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-Newfane, is strongly urging monies from this initiative be directed to Niagara County to help repair and upgrade the Niagara Falls and Lockport wastewater treatment plants.

The New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation ice breakers have been working since midnight this morning to break ice jams along the upper Niagara River. The Niagara River Control Center - part of OPG - issued a flood warning at 9:20 a.m. Ice conditions and water levels are being closely monitored.

St. Peter R.C. School students in Lewiston decided to give back to families in need during the holiday season. Instead of exchanging gifts among themselves, the students decided to purchase new clothing and toys and household items for families in the area.
