With a growing number of bed and breakfast and Airbnb-type offerings in the Village of Lewiston, the Board of Trustees recently opted to create a committee to review these businesses. At the first work session of 2023, slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, residents are invited to share their opinions on the subject.
On Wednesday, Mayor Anne Welch said the committee has offered its input, and now trustees are intent on hearing from the public.
She explained the short-term rentals “that are already up and running, they're basically grandfathered in. We're probably going to try to cap it, because people are buying up houses left and right, and we don't want to destroy our neighborhoods.
“We want people to do well that have their bed and breakfasts or Airbnb, short-term rentals. But we just need to get a handle on it.”
At last count, there are approximately 40 short-term rental sites operating within the Village of Lewiston.
With regard to the work session, Welch added, “I don't think there'll be any action taken on it. It's just for more public input.”
The Red Brick Municipal Building is located at 145 N. Fourth St.
