Earlier this week, Lewiston’s The Village Bake Shoppe announced it would offer an expanded dessert line at De Dee’s Dairy in Niagara Falls.
Owner Mike Fiore said, “We actually have been working with De Dees probably for about eight years with apple squares, chocolate chip cookies and our cannolis, and they make desserts out of them; so, pie à la mode, hot fudge cookie sundaes – stuff like that.”
He explained, “We're going to start now actually selling more dessert there. So, cake in a cup, cheesecake slices, peanut butter pie, our chocolate oblivion and cutout cookies. More of like a satellite/outlet for desserts as well. You can get Village Bake Shoppe in LaSalle now.”
De Dee’s Manager Lacey Gawel said, “Our brownie sundaes, our cookie sundaes, the pie à la mode are always huge hits. So, the (owners) really wanted to kind of extend and see what would come from it. They want to, hopefully, even expand to having another bake case in here, having more goodies. But now we have cheesecake, we have peanut butter pie, we have cookies, we’ll have cupcakes. So, really kind of just keeping our dessert theme together, and then really just adding to what we can put with our ice cream.”
She noted, “Mike has always been a huge advocate for supporting small business, as well. … Anything small businesswise, we really, really want to be able to support, especially local here.”
Gawel added, “There’s a lot of other places that are around here that may have baked goods, but Mike has always been a great person that we've connected with. He supports the same way we do. So, kind of working hand in hand together really just made sense.”
De Dee’s opened for the season on March 13, and patronage has been steady. At the time of this interview – a Tuesday afternoon – a row of cars and a line of people awaited their sweet treats.
“I think everyone is ready for spring. Everyone is ready to get out of the house, do something, have something to enjoy,” Gawel said. “Great weather has made it even better recently, so we're hoping this year is going to hopefully be an uphill from where we started last year.”
