Lewiston's Jazz Festival returns with Latin sizzle

The cool sounds of hot jazz will fill the summer air when the 14th annual Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival returns Aug. 28-29 along Center Street in the Village of Lewiston.

Voted one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association (2014), the Lewiston Jazz Festival draws more than 40,000 people to the charming village with an annual summer street festival oozing with jazz, and filling Lewiston's cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops.

Festival performances and activities are free and open to the public. Performances begin Friday (5-10 p.m.) and continue Saturday (noon until 10 p.m.).

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band headline this year's Jazz Festival - taking the stage Saturday at 8 p.m. For more than three decades, the Grammy Award-winning Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straight-ahead jazz, gritty soul music and infections melodies and rhythms, incorporating a variety of Latin American and South American influences.

Friday's Main Stage headliner is Ron Corsaro & The Upstate Express. Fans can enjoy the performances for free or purchase VIP seats for $20 (also available online at LewistonJazz.com).

This year's Jazz Festival features more than 25 performances on four different stages as well as "after-hours" jazz at area restaurants. Culinary delights and regional wine samplings from Niagara County wineries will be offered throughout the festival, along with the annual premiere jewelry show.

The Jazz Festival's presenting sponsors are Sevenson Environmental Services and Artpark & Company.

"Sevenson is pleased to be the sponsor for one of Western New York's premier music events, as we support the arts and the important role they play in our community," said President Michael Elia.

M&T Bank returns as the annual "Rising Star Sponsor." Primary sponsors include Certo Brothers Distributing, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, Tedesco Construction and Wegmans.

The Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival is a nonprofit event supported by community donations, corporate sponsors, the Town and Village of Lewiston and Niagara County.
