Niagara County Sheriff’s Office press release

Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced law enforcement agencies across Niagara County will participate in the STOP-DWI “100 Days of Summer” high-visibility engagement campaign throughout the months of June, July and August. The initiative is part of a statewide effort to enhance traffic safety, reduce impaired driving, and increase public awareness during the busy summer travel season.

Summer traditionally brings an increase in traffic volume as residents and visitors travel for vacations, holidays, concerts, festivals, sporting events and community celebrations. With more vehicles on the roadways and more social gatherings taking place, law enforcement agencies are urging motorists to prioritize safety and make responsible decisions before driving.

Throughout the “100 Days of Summer” campaign, members of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and police agencies throughout the county will conduct highly visible patrols and targeted traffic enforcement details aimed at identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road. Enforcement efforts will focus on alcohol and drug-impaired driving, hazardous moving violations, and behaviors that place motorists, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists and first responders at risk.

In addition to enforcement, the campaign places a strong emphasis on public outreach and education. Deputies and officers will continue working with the community to reinforce the importance of planning ahead, utilizing sober transportation options, and understanding the dangers associated with impaired driving. Drivers are reminded that impairment is not limited to alcohol and may include cannabis, prescription medications, illegal drugs, or combinations of substances that diminish a person’s ability to safely operate a vehicle.

The STOP-DWI “100 Days of Summer” campaign is supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee as part of an ongoing statewide strategy to improve roadway safety and reduce preventable crashes. Similar high-visibility enforcement initiatives are conducted during other high-travel and holiday periods throughout the year.

While New York has experienced meaningful reductions in impaired driving fatalities through sustained education and enforcement efforts, impaired driving continues to be a significant public safety concern. High-visibility engagement campaigns are intended to increase awareness, promote voluntary compliance with traffic laws, and discourage dangerous driving behaviors before tragedies occur.

Filicetti and Niagara County law enforcement agencies encourage everyone to enjoy the summer responsibly by making safety a priority. Motorists are reminded to always designate a sober driver, arrange alternate transportation, use rideshare services or public transportation, or stay overnight if impaired. One poor decision can have lifelong consequences.
