YMCA Buffalo Niagara names Michael Farris president & CEO

YMCA Buffalo Niagara announced Michael Farris Jr. was named the association's next president and CEO.

Farris’ appointment follows an extensive nationwide search led by YMCA of the USA, in partnership with the CEO search committee, the board of directors, and the Alliance of New York State YMCAs.

Farris brings nearly 20 years of YMCA leadership experience, including his current role as senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. His career has focused on operations, community partnerships, and strengthening the YMCA’s impact within the communities it serves.

“Michael brings the experience, vision and heart needed to guide YMCA Buffalo Niagara into its next chapter,” said Mark Lempko, chair of the YMCA Buffalo Niagara board of directors. “Throughout the search process, Michael shared a clear excitement for this community, a deep respect for the Y’s history, and a strong belief in the role YMCA Buffalo Niagara can play in helping children, families and neighborhoods thrive.”

For Farris, the opportunity to join YMCA Buffalo Niagara is both a professional and a personal calling.

“YMCA Buffalo Niagara has an incredible history, but what excites me most is the future,” he said. "With its incredible resilience, pride and opportunity, Western New York is a remarkable community to join. I am honored to lead alongside the Y’s passionate board, staff, volunteers and partners as we strengthen the Y’s impact for the next generation.”

Farris said he was especially drawn to YMCA Buffalo Niagara’s commitment to addressing some of the most important needs facing the region. The organization’s strategic priorities focus on preparing youth for success, preventing drownings, increasing social connections, and improving community health.

“At its best, the Y is one of the first places people turn when they need support, connection, encouragement or opportunity,” Farris said. “My hope is to help YMCA Buffalo Niagara continue to be that trusted first point of contact for people across Western New York. Whether a family is looking for safe childcare, a child is learning to swim, an older adult is looking for connection, or someone is taking the first step toward better health, the Y should be a place where people know they are welcome, supported and valued.”

Prior to his work in Indianapolis, Farris served in national leadership roles with YMCA of the USA and held leadership positions with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

“Michael understands that the YMCA is not simply a building or a program provider,” Lempko added. “The Y is a community partner, a gathering place, and a source of support when people need it most. His leadership will help us continue building our legacy while looking forward with energy, focus and optimism.”

Farris holds a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and a master's from the University of Central Missouri. He and his family look forward to beginning his new role in late-July.
