Al Jardine and David Marks were both founding members of The Beach Boys in 1961. However, they did not tour together with The Beach Boys until the second tour of 1962 when Al took the place of Brian Wilson and David played guitar. Both Al and David sang and played guitars on The Beach Boys first nationwide hit, “Surfin’ Safari,” released in 1962. Al and David also sang and played guitars on the last Beach Boys hit, “That’s Why God Made The Radio,” in 2012. Both Al and David are members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as members of The Beach Boys.
Surf City All Stars
In 1967, The Beach Boys started adding extra musicians/singers to the original five members so they could perform “live” all of the difficult hit recordings they were doing at that time. At one point, The Beach Boys touring band consisted of 12 members! This is how each of the Surf City Allstars got their start.
Here are the group members now backing up Al and David on tour:
•David Logeman (drums) performed with Brian Wilson in 1990. He was hired by the lead singer of The Beach Boys, Mike Love, in 1995. David performed live and recorded with all the surviving members of The Beach Boys. After David left touring with the members of The Beach Boys, he started the Surf City Allstars in 1999.
•Matt Jardine (vocals/percussion) is Al’s son. He replaced Brian in The Beach Boys touring band in 1988 and sang all of Brian’s vocal parts for 10 years, performing all around the world. When Matt left The Beach Boys, in addition to the Surf City Allstars, he also performed in Brian’s touring band.
•Philip Bardowell (vocals/guitar) was hired into The Beach Boys touring band by original Beach Boy Carl Wilson in 1996. After Carl died of cancer, Philip sang lead vocals and played lead guitar for years on many world tours with The Beach Boys.
•Chris Farmer (vocals/bass) is the former musical director for The Beach Boys. He played bass and sang lead vocals with The Beach Boys touring band for over 10 years before joining the Surf City Allstars.
•Michael Campion (keys/vocals) has performed the greatest hits of the Beach Boys – and has done it with at least two or more of the original members. Michael has been performing all of these beautiful songs of The Beach Boys for over 35 years.
