Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center appoints Freeland as chief of orthopaedics

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced Erik Freeland, DO, has been appointed chief of orthopaedics, effective Jan. 1. Freeland joined NFMMC’s esteemed orthopaedic team in September of 2023 and has quickly become a vital part of the Memorial's commitment to providing high-quality care to the Niagara region.

Freeland, a member of the UB Orthopedic group, is nationally recognized for his expertise in treating foot and ankle disorders through both nonoperative and operative techniques. His dedication to patient care and extensive clinical experience will elevate NFMMC’s orthopaedic program to new heights.

A Western New York native, Freeland’s academic journey began at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he earned a degree in physical therapy. He completed his medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by an orthopaedic surgical residency. Freeland further honed his skills through an orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Before joining NFMMC, Freeland served as an orthopaedic surgeon at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, where he also held the positions of division head of foot and ankle and assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery. His leadership and expertise in orthopaedic care have been widely recognized throughout his career.

Freeland is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics, and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, reflecting his dedication to advancing the field of orthopaedics.

In his new role as chief of orthopaedics, Freeland will oversee the continued growth and development of NFMMC’s orthopaedic services, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and innovation.
