Catholic Health Press Release

If you drive past Kenmore Mercy Hospital, you will see 21 frogs lined up on the front lawn holding the letter “A.” That’s because they’re playing a celebratory game of leap frog!

Kenmore Mercy Hospital was awarded its 21st consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a leading national agency that rates hospitals on how well they protect patients from preventable harm. Kenmore Mercy is the only hospital in New York to receive 21 consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grades, and one of 30 in the country.

“This award is a representation of our team’s longstanding dedication to providing exceptional patient care,” President Walt Ludwig said. “Our team continues to raise the bar on quality and patient safety, and because of that we have been able to achieve a level of excellence very few hospitals in the country have.”

All other Catholic Health hospitals, including Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Sisters of Charity Hospital, and Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, received “B” Safety Grades, once again making the health system the area leader in quality and patient safety.

Founded more than 20 years ago by large employers and other major purchasers of health care, The Leapfrog Group is an independent industry watchdog that collects and reports safety data for nearly 3,000 hospitals, giving consumers the information they need to make more informed health care decisions. The Safety Grade Report assigns letter grades ranging from A-F, based on more than 30 national performance measures that rate how well a hospital protects patients from preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

“While today’s results are promising, patient safety remains a crisis-level hazard in health care,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Some hospitals are much better than others at protecting patients from harm, and that’s why we make the Hospital Safety Grade available to the public, and why we encourage all hospitals to focus more attention on safety.”
