Highlighting nationally recognized achievements in health care quality and patient safety, Kenmore Mercy Hospital was named a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, a national industry watchdog organization of employers and other large purchasers of health care known for setting the toughest quality standards. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive.
“Our medical staff and associates are second to none, and the reason we continue to receive these national recognitions year-after-year,” said Walt Ludwig, president of Kenmore Mercy Hospital. “You can’t be a ‘Top Hospital’ without a top team. I’d like to thank our physicians, caregivers, and support staff for all their hard work and everything they do for our patients and community.”
More than 2,100 hospitals were considered for Leapfrog’s Top Hospitals award. Kenmore Mercy was one of only 35 hospitals in the country, and the only one in New York state, to receive the “Top General Hospital” Award. A total of 132 hospitals were named in the following categories: eight children’s hospitals, 35 general hospitals, 15 rural hospitals, and 74 teaching hospitals.
This recognition follows last month’s Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade Report in which Kenmore Mercy received its 20th consecutive “A” Safety Grade, making it one of only 36 hospitals in the country, and the only one in New York, to earn this distinction.
“Sometimes, we like to think of Kenmore Mercy as the best kept secret in Western New York,” Ludwig continued. “But as we continue to receive these national awards for quality and patient safety, and set the standard of care among our peers locally, regionally and nationally, we want our community to know that one of the best hospitals in the country is right in their own backyard.”
“Protecting patients from preventable harm is the cornerstone of The Leapfrog Group’s mission,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Kenmore Mercy has demonstrated that patient safety is their top priority, and we’re truly pleased to recognize them as a Top Hospital this year. Congratulations to hospital staff at all levels who made this national recognition possible.”
To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety and achieve top performance in their category.
