The Village of Youngstown Recreation Department announced its 29th annual Nancy Price Memorial Run is approaching in a matter of weeks – and registration is now underway.

This race is held each year in honor of Nancy Price, the director of Youngstown Recreation for 20 years. It is open to participants age 14 and under, up to seniors ages 75 and older,

“Price was the recreation director who actually put the recreation program on the map,” said Jeff Gruarin, Village of Youngstown Recreation director. “She had Veteran's Park in Youngstown built up to what it is today from just a field. She did this by grit and determination. She was a fixture at the park, and became friend/parent to all the children who came by the park.

“Price passed away from cancer far too soon (in December 1994). Today, this race seeks to carry on her hopes and dreams for the youth of the community. Proceeds from the event go toward the annual Nancy & Vicki Price Memorial Scholarships, which are given out to graduates from the area who possess the values she held and who are active in the community.”

The 2023 race is set for Friday, May 12, with a course that starts and finishes at the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. firehall, 625 Third St. (across from Veterans Park). It opens at 6 p.m. with a one-half mile “Kids Fun Run” (ages 14 and under) that is staged through Veterans Park. The 5K run/walk, for participants for ages 15 to 75-plus, has a 6:30 p.m. start from the firehall. The route features a scenic course through the Village of Youngstown and Fort Niagara State Park, and concludes back at the firehall.

Online registration is open and continues right to start of the race on May 12. Race categories include 14 and under; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; and 75 and older. The race is organized by Race Management Solutions

Signup costs are as follows: the one-half mile “Kids Fun Run” is $10 though race day; the 5K run/walk, for ages 18 and younger, is $15 presale, and $20 on race day; and the 5K run/walk (ages 19 and older) is $20 presale or $25 on race day.

New this year is a virtual option for those unable to make the trip to Youngstown to join in this community event.

“Please join us on Friday, May 12,” Gruarin said. “Can’t make the race? Participate virtually.”

He added, “Simply sign up for the virtual race option and you get to choose the location and time to get out on your own and run/walk your 5K during the month of May. Feel free to use the free IYR (It’s Your Race) virtual app to track and score your run.”

Gruarin said virtual runners would be able to manually enter their finish time directly to the IYR results that opens on May 1 and continues to May 23.

He said a limited number of official Nancy Price 2023 race T-shirts are available on a first-come, first-served basis for registrants. The first 25 registrants of the “Kids Fun Run” will receive a Youngstown tote bag.

As far as prizes for the participants, trophies will be presented to the first-place overall male and female 5K finishers following the race.

“We will also be rewarding the fastest team of three with a trophy,” Gruarin said.

Participants will be able to download custom finisher certificates from the race event page and view finish line photos following the race.
