The “Spirit of Victory”, a sculpture sited at Joseph Davis State Park, is in need of repair. The statue, by artist Tom Mullany, was originally part of a larger installation titled “Drums Along the Niagara,” created in 1989 when the artist was in-residence at Artpark.

In 1998, Lewiston Council on the Arts (LCA) reclaimed some of the components of the original installation and brought Tom back to reinvent the pieces as “The Spirit of Victory.”

In the years since, the piece has suffered the ravages of wind and weather, but will soon be restored both structurally and esthetically by Lewiston metal artists Michael Hibbard and Dan Buttery.

New signage, landscaping and benches will add to the surroundings of this tranquil, meditative pocket park on Lower River Road.

The timeline for the project will have work completed this fall with a rededication celebration planned at the site.

The work, sponsored by LCA and a donation by Bill and Barbara Vrooman, will be done in collaboration with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Town of Lewiston and the Lewiston Water Pollution Control Center.

Artists Michael Hibbard and Dan Buttery plan the restoration.
