Current forms cannot be accepted after that date

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Wednesday reminded those who are planning to submit an application for a pistol permit that they must submit their paperwork by Aug. 31, or they will have to start the process over when new state legislation takes effect Sept. 1.

“There are a lot of unanswered questions and significant concerns about this state legislation, but the one thing we know for sure is that the current applications cannot be accepted after Aug. 31,” Jastrzemski said. “So, if you started your application and it’s laying at home on your desk, I highly recommend you complete it and get it submitted right away, or you run the risk of having to start over.”

Jastrzemski said not only will there be a new application formulated by the state police on Sept. 1, but the entire permit process is going to be more complicated with a whole new level of bureaucratic involvement and additional requirements.

“We will continue to distribute the current applications right through this month, so if you have been thinking about applying, you may want to get an application from our office, and, again, complete and submit it by the end of the month,” Jastrzemski said. “All applications in the system by Aug, 31 will follow the current permit process.”

The current application can be found at https://www.niagaracounty.com/Departments/Pistol-Permit-Office. Jastrzemski noted the pistol permit office, which is usually closed the public on Wednesdays, would now be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through the end of Augusts to accept applications.
