Virtual 4-H livestock auction will continue

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County’s board of directors held a special meeting on Friday, May 29, resulting in the decision to postpone the Niagara County Fair until 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A press release said, “CCE realizes that this decision will cause great disappointment within the community, but deemed this decision necessary in order to ensure the health and safety of our area residents and aid in the containment of COVID-19. CCE is heartbroken for the small businesses, 4-H youth, competitors and exhibitors impacted by the decision. This was not an easy decision to make, and many efforts were explored to identify ways to preserve the Niagara County Fair experience.”

Though the County Fair won’t take place, CCE staff are planning to virtually host a showcase of 4-H animals who would also be available for purchase in an online auction. Information on the virtual auction will be available at a later date at www.cceniagaracounty.org.

The venue’s website offered additional details.

Speaking Monday on LCTV, Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh said, “Many of the festivals and fun events that happen during the summer have already been canceled at this point, because of the uncertainty (of the coronavirus and state crowd limitations). I want to let you know that, Friday evening, we received word from the board of directors of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County, who has decided to cancel this year's Niagara County Fair. Certainly, a disappointment to many, but not unexpected. We've seen those events canceled throughout the state over the last week or two.

“Now, the board is still working on some creative events, to have instead of the fair. In particular, they're working on a virtual auction for the livestock that’s raised by the young men and women, in place of the live auction that would normally take place at the fair. So, check out their website as we go along throughout the summer. You'll probably find that there's some other great events that they're able to offer in place of the fair this year.”
