16-part series launches March 13 with ‘Our Hill’ by Kristianne Meal

Just Buffalo Literary Center released the trailer for “LIT CITY VOICES,” a video series showcasing the vibrancy of Buffalo through the writers who call it home. The series launches March 6 with “Our Hill” by Kristianne Meal.

Each video in the series will feature a living Buffalo poet reading an original poem, with a new video released on Just Buffalo’s YouTube channel and social media pages every other Friday.

“Buffalo’s story too often gets reduced to lost Super Bowls and snow, when in reality, this is a city of artists and poets,” said Noah Falck, Just Buffalo’s education director and curator of the “SILO CITY Reading Series.” “ ‘LIT CITY VOICES’ is about revealing the city in all its complexity and beauty.”

Filmmaker Kyle Marler, who collaborated with Just Buffalo to bring the series to life, is currently based in Mexico, but considers himself a quasi-Buffalonian.

“I’ve spent enough transformative time in Buffalo to consider it home,” Marler said. “I love bringing the city to life via a mix of cinematic and literary arts.”

“To me, poet Sage Enderton delivers the most devastating line of the series,” Marler added. “ ‘I am a buckling knee, and you have always been the asphalt.’ Makes me feel a little Buffalo when she says that.”

Enderton, a young writer and recent Just Buffalo Writing Center alum, is one of 16 poets in the series. Together, they showcase the breadth of Western New York’s vibrant literary community.

Other participating writers include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Dennis, nationally competing slam poets Eve Williams and Brandon Williamson, American Book Award-winning Onondaga writer Eric Gansworth and University at Buffalo professor of Spanish linguistics Jorge Guitart – all of whom call Buffalo home. The roster also includes Meal, Joe Hall, Zanaya Hussain, Laura Marris, Janet McNally, Sherry Robbins, Annette Daniels Taylor, Rachelle Toarmino, Julio Montalvo Valentín and Nina Vega-Westhoff.
