Celebrities & sports icons to join thousands at gala to benefit New York school children

Legendary New York Yankees closer and five time World Series champion Mariano Rivera will join celebrities, sports icons, former teammates, family and friends to be honored for his unanimous, first-ballot induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame at 6 p.m. tonight at Marina del Rey, 1 Marina Drive in the Bronx.

All funds raised at the gala will go toward construction costs of a first-of-its-kind learning center to serve New York’s underserved communities, offering lifechanging educational services, afterschool programs, and youth sports to children in impoverished areas.

The gala is anticipated to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit children in need.

Rivera is perhaps the most iconic baseball pitcher of the past 50 years. Competing his stalwart career in 2013, the career-New York Yankee played 18 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, securing countless accolades, including a five World Series titles, a World Series MVP award, and, during his final year had his jersey number (42) retired by Major League Baseball.

Rivera was enshrined in the “Cathedral of Baseball,” in Cooperstown, after being unanimously selected to the Hall of Fame in 2019. He is the first and only player to receive a unanimous selection.

Rivera formed the Mariano Rivera Foundation. Its mission is empowering impoverished youth with education for the future. This includes providing vital funding and assistance for underserved communities unable to afford services, afterschool activities and sports. The organization is rooted on three core values: schooling, sports and spirituality.
