There is a line – a chorus, in fact – in The O’Jays’ hit 1975 song that says, “Got to give the people/Well, well/Give the people what they want.”

“Give the People What They Want” is exactly what Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant did at Artpark on Tuesday.

The O’Jays offered a high-energy performance that had the audience up on its feet singing, clapping and dancing in the outdoor amphitheater. The R&B act’s setlist spanned its 50-year career, and the trio’s vocal execution proved why their group is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Not to be outdone, opening act Average White Band got the party started with an enthusiastic set of its own. AWB left the crowd wanting more with its closing rendition of hit song “Pick Up the Pieces.”

Next up in the “Tuesday in the Park” lineup is a prog-rock carnival of hitmakers, with “The Royal Affair Tour.” Artpark will welcome to Lewiston musical acts Yes, Asia, John Lodge of the Moody Blues and Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy with guest vocalist Arthur Brown. The concert begins at 6 p.m.
