Monday night, the Town of Wheatfield Town Board held its second regular meeting of April. To open the meeting, Dana Weber asked the Town Board what it knew regarding an article in the Tribune of Barge Brewing talking about a Bergholz location. As a resident of the hamlet of Bergholz, she was curious about the possible location.

The talks of the brewery are in early stages and have not reached the town’s Planning Board. The proposal was on the agenda for discussion at a recent Wheatfield Local Development Corp. meeting, but the session was postponed to a later date.

The Tribune was notified of Barge Brewery’s interest and was able to contact owner Jeremy Hogan to gather information. Hogan did not want to disclose the location until a contract was signed.

Much speculation amongst residents and leaders is that the project could be placed at The Meeting Place along Niagara Road, but with the proposal still in discussion, nothing is certain.

“I don’t think anything has been cast in stone,” Supervisor Don MacSwan said.

Building Inspector Mike Klock added, “That was news to me, too. I was wondering the same thing when I saw the article.”

Councilman Larry Helwig said he believes he was the first to hear from Barge Brewing. He said, “I sent it right away to our Local Development Corporation. Bill Wagner is our director of the LDC for Wheatfield and Bill Wagner is now in touch with this person. I think they’re looking at The Meeting Place, which is right across the street from Bergholz Fire. That’s all I know. I had an email and I forwarded it.”

MacSwan said the matter is premature and, if anything were to come about, he would encourage Klock to be in touch with the resident. Additionally, he said Barge Brewing would have to undergo a Planning Board site plan review once, if and when, it comes to the board.

•The Town Board issued a negative declaration – no significant impacts to the environment – in accordance with the State Environmental Quality Review regarding the small cell telecommunications facilities law. The law was proposed at the April 1 meeting and a public hearing was held.

A nine-page law created by the town will determine how the structures can be placed in the town. The law requests the units go on existing structures throughout the town to help improve cellular service. If a new pole had to be installed, the law states there would be regulations that it must be installed a certain way, look a certain way and have site plan approval.

After approving the SEQR, the Town Board adopted the local law.

The full nine-page law is available in the town clerk’s office at Wheatfield Town Hall for the public to read.

•Helwig announced the Liberty Drive cleanup will occur on May 4. Two Cub Scout Packs – 833 and 824 – will attend the cleanup and, without disclosing the name of the business, Helwig said there will be a special donation to the Scouts.

•The next Town of Wheatfield Town Board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, with a presentation from Aflac.
