New one-stop community center will be named Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise

Scheduled to open in 2020, $15 million center will provide community and preventative services, emergency shelter, transitional housing & recuperative care for homeless

The Alfiero Family Charitable Foundation has announced a $1 million commitment to support construction for the new Buffalo City Mission Community Center at 100 E. Tupper St. The venue will be named the Alfiero Family Center of Hope and Promise.

“The Buffalo City Mission is blessed and humbled by this incredible act of generosity from the Alfiero Family Charitable Foundation,” said Stuart Harper, CEO and executive director of the Buffalo City Mission. “For more than a century, our organization’s work has been anchored by a sense of purpose to instill hope and promise through our service to this region’s homeless community. In naming our future Community Center, we honor the foundation for its integral part in establishing a place that will have transformative, positive impact for our homeless community for years to come.”

“It is our honor to support an initiative that will change the face of homelessness in this region,” said Salvatore Alfiero, chairman of the Alfiero Family Charitable Foundation. “We recognize the overwhelming hardships that come with homelessness, and we also have a personal connection with the toll it can take on our community’s veterans. On behalf of our foundation, I am proud to support the Buffalo City Mission in their work to put every homeless veteran, man, woman and child on the path to a better life.”

The City Mission is committed to serving veterans as part of its broader work for the homeless community. The City Mission invests $565,000 per year in supporting its homeless veteran guests, and last year served 138 men and women veterans.

Scheduled to open in 2020, the 75,000-square-foot flagship community center will provide preventative services on the front end to decrease the percentage of homelessness year-over-year for those who are on the brink of homelessness. It will also deliver more complete care to individuals who already experience homelessness. Notable features will include space for social service agencies, case management, mental health services, medical care, job training, basic family services, legal services, food and clothing.

The current Buffalo City Mission will remain open throughout the construction process.

The building is part of the City Mission’s vision moving into the next century to provide services that help prevent and decrease homelessness in the community. Today, approximately $12.2 million of a target $15 million has been committed or is in process – all through the City Mission’s “Next Century Capital Campaign.”
