Niagara University’s College of Education, Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement, and Ostapenko Center for Race, Equality and Mission are co-sponsoring a summit titled “Mobilizing the Community to Transform the Lives of Children Living in Poverty.” The free event will take place from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in the Russell J. Salvatore Dining Commons on Niagara University’s campus.

Dr. Anael Alston, New York state assistant commissioner for the Office of Access, Equity, and Community Engagement Services, will give the keynote presentation. Alston leads multiple programs for the State Education Department, most notably “My Brother’s Keeper – Family and Community Engagement Program.”

Following the presentation, participants will be able to network with the Niagara and Erie county agencies that offer programs and services for children, youth and families facing economic insecurity, including Pinnacle Community Services, Youth Mentoring Services, Inter-Community Services, BEAM-Buffalo-area Engineering Awareness for Minorities, YWCA of the Greater Niagara Frontier and the United Way of Greater Niagara.

Practicing P-12 educators, counselors, and members of the local community who wish to learn more about the options available to the area’s children, youth and families, and the work being done to alleviate economic insecurity in the region, are encouraged to attend this conference.

For more information or to register for the summit, contact Maritza Mulready at [email protected] by Friday, Jan. 18.
