On Friday, Nov. 9, the Kiwanis K-Kids of Colonial Village Elementary School presented a veterans assembly and breakfast.
At 9:40 a.m., the Colonial Village students filed into the auditorium for the school's second annual event honoring veterans. Seated near the stage were the veterans and those now serving in the military related to students of Colonial Village.
The children related accompanied these men and women at the stage. The assemblage began with the pledge of allegiance and was followed by the fourth- and fifth-graders singing the Star-Spangled Banner.
K-Kids Adviser and School Counselor Jenn Ertel provided a history of Veterans Day, which was originally called Armistice Day. Then, the Colonial Village kids, one by one, stood up and introduced their grandfathers, dads, moms, uncles, and aunts who are now serving or have served the United States. The second- and third-graders sang My Country, 'Tis of Thee (America).
A slide show featuring military relatives of Colonial Village students was then presented, followed by the first-graders and kindergarteners singing "Thank You Veterans."  Also in attendance were therapy dogs from Dog Tags of Western New York. The veterans and their families were dismissed to the cafeteria for a breakfast hosted by the K-Kids. The breakfast consisted of sweet rolls, donuts, fruit, and orange and apple juice.
The Colonial Village K-Kids are advised by Jenn Ertel. The K-Kids are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield. Kiwanis K-Kids is a student leadership program. Danny Maerten is the club's adviser/liaison to the school.
