Western New York tire retailer and automotive services provider Dunn Tire is teaming with one of Buffalo's greatest football legends to help local children catch a love for reading.
Dunn Tire is working with NFL Hall of Fame receiver Andre Reed to sponsor the "Read with Reed 83 Challenge," which kicked off Friday at the Boys & Girls Club of the Northtowns, 54 Riverdale Ave. The goal of the program is to "encourage kids to exercise their minds, tackle a good book, catch the love of reading, understand that reading is a way 'out and up,' and plan to read at least 30 minutes each day."
The program supports Boys & Girls Clubs in NFL cities.
"I was a club kid who made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame," Reed said. "Now I represent what they stand for; and I know that, through reading, every child can do the same. Reading is a way out."
To support the program, Dunn Tire collected donated new and used children's books at its West Seneca and Williamsville locations. The company presented the books at the kick-off event.
"Reading encourages children to start off on the path toward a strong education," said Robert Clark, managing director of retail operations, Dunn Tire. "Andre Reed gave football fans across Western New York plenty of reasons to cheer during his Hall of Fame career. The work he is doing with the 'Read with Reed 83 Challenge' proves that he is a superstar away from the field, as well. Dunn Tire is proud to support this incredible effort for the children of our community."
The program's local MVP readers will attend tonight's Bills-Patriots "Monday Night Football" game as Reed's guests.
The Buffalo stop was one of several rallies Reed is holding in NFL cities across the U.S. in support of the "Read with Reed 83 Challenge."
"Reading is tied to graduation rates and, ultimately, success rates - especially in inner cities where I plan to do my literacy programming," Reed added. "It's my new legacy, and my commitment to kids, to make reading cool again by incorporating pro athletes and the game of football into the program."
To support the" Read with Reed" initiative, one can purchase Reed's children's book and autobiography, titled "Little Andre Reads."
