"A lot of men don't understand it in words, but they know they have enormous responsibility as the 'keystone' of their families," Niagara County Legislator Owen T. Steed explained as he announced plans for a Saturday Father's Day luncheon. "They often hold the whole thing together."
The event - set for late morning on Saturday, June 16 - will include a meal catered by Niagara Falls-based Harris Catering, discussion, and motivational remarks by Dr. Jimmie Hardaway Sr. of Trinity Baptist Church.
Steed, who was joined by his teenage son, said fatherhood had been the most important experience in his life.
"Father's Day is a time when we honor our own dads, when dads get presents and lunches and breakfasts in bed, but it's also a time when fathers should reflect on their awesome responsibility -and their unique privilege," Steed said. "Dr. Hardaway will speak to that much more eloquently than I can, but watching your kids grow up is the reward for the sacrifice of getting them there."
The Father's Day luncheon runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Doris Jones Family Resource Center, 3001 9th St. It is free and open to the public.
"We want to honor good men with a warm meal that acknowledges all the hard choices they make to be good dads, but we also want to inspire them to do better," Steed added.
Sponsors include Steed, the Niagara Falls Housing Authority, Williamson Funeral Home, ECMC and Harris Catering.
