The DeGlopper Memorial had a sprucing up in advance of Monday's Memorial Day ceremony.
Students from Connor Middle School were some of the volunteers who pitched in to tidy up DeGlopper Park, located at the intersection of Grand Island Boulevard and Baseline Road. The town's Memorial Day observances will take place there at 10 a.m. Monday.
Christopher Taylor, a member of the DeGlopper Memorial Expansion Committee, reports that students from the Connor Middle School Interact club visited the memorial last week to help weed, mulch and plant for the upcoming service on Memorial Day.
"A big thank you to Mrs. Antonelli, Mrs. Barnes and students from the middle school Interact club for taking time after school to come help us get ready for the Memorial Day service at the DeGlopper Memorial," Taylor said. "These students worked very hard and got a ton done!"
This will be the first Memorial Day ceremony at the park since major improvements have been made, including nine new flagpoles.
Lt. Namon Dimitroff of the U.S. Coast Guard will deliver the Memorial Day address. He has been serving as the chief of incident management at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo and leads the all-hazards response initiatives and program oversight spanning three states with 600 miles of international border along the St. Lawrence Seaway, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
Dimitroff and his wife, Rebecca, live on Grand Island.
The Memorial Day ceremony will include a roll call in memory of 17 Islanders who gave their lives in defense of their country, a presentation of the wreath for the monument, a rifle salute, and playing of Taps. The ceremony will also feature musical selections by the Grand Island High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Martin Allen.
Joe Menter, recreation supervisor for the Town of Grand Island, said in the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the pavilion at the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9249, 2121 Grand Island Blvd.
