A Joint Statement from NYCOM Executive Director Peter Baynes and NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario on the proposed Internet Fairness Conformity Act, being discussed as part of the 2018-19 state budget: "The Internet Fairness Conformity Act should be enacted as part of the 2018-19 state budget. The act supports existing local businesses on our main streets and in our malls that have been competing against out-of-state retailers who have been taking advantage of a loophole in our state laws that allows them to not collect sales taxes. When our businesses lose to out-of-state retailers, then our communities lose stores, jobs and local economic activity.
"These taxes are already owed under state law, but often go uncollected because our laws are outdated. Sales tax also helps to offset reliance on regressive property taxes. We encourage state leaders to include this in the final state budget."
