The Buffalo Sabres announced the organization assigned forward Alexander Nylander to the Swedish men's national junior ice hockey team for the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. The tournament will be held in Buffalo from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2018.
"This is a tremendous chance for Alex to play for his country at the upcoming tournament," Sabres General Manager Jason Botterill said. "The World Junior Championship is a prestigious and challenging tournament that we are so excited to be hosting here in Buffalo. This opportunity will provide another important step in Alex's development."
Nylander (age 19, 6'1", 192 pounds) has led Team Sweden in points at each of the past two IIHF World Junior Championships and tied for the tournament lead in 2017 with 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) in seven games. The Sabres' first-round pick (8th overall) at the 2016 NHL Draft, Nylander has totaled 34 points (12/22) in 79 games during his first two professional seasons with the Rochester Americans (AHL).
