Grocer Frank Budwey is handing off his family business to the Kusmierski family.
North Tonawanda's Budwey's Supermarket was recently purchased by grocer Brian Kusmierski, who opened and operated the Market in the Square in West Seneca for the past 18 years. Kusmierski has been in the grocery business since he was 16 years old.
"I'm honored and I'm thrilled that Frank has chosen my family to continue the Budwey tradition in North Tonawanda," Kusmierski said.
He added, "We take this as a serious obligation to the community, just as we have with Market in The Square. Our customers invite us to the dinner table every night. They depend on us to be there for them. We will continue to be there for them in the Southtowns and now we have the privilege of being there for them in the Tonawandas."
Budwey described passing along the business as "bittersweet."
"I've been in the grocery business for six decades, but it's just time," he said. "However, I was not going to let a conglomerate come in here and make this a corporate cold store and eliminate jobs. I've known Brian (Kusmierski) for more than 30 years. We share the same philosophies. Like me, he believes it's important to work with as many local vendors and farmers as possible. Brian's a good man and he cares about all the right things - the community, the customers and the employees. I'm 100 percent confident the Kusmierski family will operate this store the way my family has operated it for more than 90 years. That's the Budwey way."
Budwey's grandmother, Saltonia, opened the family's original store on Oliver Street in North Tonawanda in 1925. The current store on Division Street also houses the Old World Sausage Factory, which includes numerous family recipes, as well as Flora's Café, named after Budwey's mother. The business currently employs 120 people.
