Lewiston Kiwanis Club meat raffle

Sat, Jul 29th 2017 07:00 am
The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston will hold a meat raffle Saturday, Aug. 5, to support Project Eliminate - the Kiwanis International global initiative to eradicate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This meat raffle will take place at the Lewiston No. 2 firehall, 1705 Saunders Settlement Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with drawings beginning at 7 p.m.
Kiwanian Dean Beltrano said Project Eliminate is a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to inoculate mothers and children who otherwise would not survive if they contracted tetanus.
"Our mission as Kiwanians is to serve those who can least afford to serve themselves - the children of the world," he said. "Whether it is in our own community or halfway around the world, this is what Kiwanis is all about.
"Tetanus is a painful and deadly disease. It is also one we don't give much thought. After all, if you need a tetanus shot, you go get one. But in places like Africa, the Middle East and the Asian Pacific, it's not possible to just go get a shot because you need one. Kiwanis International saw what was happening - the suffering of the women and children who contracted this disease, and decided to do something about it. The initiative began in 2010 and will continue until 2020. Kiwanis is supplying the funding, through donations fundraising and whatever means possible. UNICEF is coordinating the purchase, distribution and administration of the shots. To date, tetanus has been eradicated in 42 countries with the most being Ethiopia. There are 17 countries left, with 13 of those scheduled to get their inoculations this year."
Tickets for the meat raffle are $6 in advance or $7 at the door. A table of eight can be reserved for $40.
There will be 50/50 splits, a basket raffle, a wheel barrel full of booze and a grill/meat package.
For more information, or to reserve seating, email Beltrano.
Those desiring to make a direct donation can mail to: Kiwanis International, Project Eliminate, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
