Liberty drive cleanup a success

More than 30 local volunteers participated in the 26th annual Liberty Drive Cleanup last Saturday.

Larry L. Helwig, Town of Wheatfield deputy supervisor and coordinator of the event, said the event was "very successful."

Members of Cub Scout Pack 833 from Adams Fire Co. and other volunteers cleaned up the area by picking up trash.

To help the local effort, the Niagara County Sewer District provided a dumpster, and the Town of Wheatfield Highway Department assisted and provided a truck.

Frontier Fire Co. provided refreshments and restroom facilities, while Helwig, Councilman Arthur Gerbec and Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe treated the group to doughnuts.

During the cleanup, Helwig said illegal dumping materials were found from two parties. He said an address from Wheatfield and Amherst were obtained.

"They leave this stuff right in the bags for us to find," Helwig said.

The information was given to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

Helwig said other trash on Liberty Drive with names and addresses were found and turned over to authorities recently by the town's Highway Department, also.
