Where Irish eyes are smiling
By Michelle Blackley Glynn
Tucked away in a charming brick house in downtown Lockport is a restaurant that has become a dining institution. The Shamus restaurant has been operating since 1973 and still serving some of the best dishes in town.
On the menu is a wide variety of contemporary cuisine, including the restaurant's potato pancakes ($6) and homemade applesauce that never goes out of season. There is also a dessert menu that satisfies the most discerning of sweet tooths. The house special is peanut butter pie, made with local artisan ice cream from Lake Effect.
This Irish eatery wouldn't be complete without a full bar that pours traditional libations including a solid wine selection.
The atmosphere may be cozy, but it doesn't have to be frequented during only the cooler months. The outdoor patio is usually packed for lunch during mild weather, and it's where notables of Lockport tend to dine.
Reservations during the weekend are recommended - and expect a hopping St. Patrick's Day, not just on March 17, but throughout the entire month.
