Niagara-Wheatfield High School students Christopher Schimshack and Elizabeth Whittle stood proudly in front of their families, friends, school administrators and the Board of Education Sept. 17 as they accepted their diplomas.
Also congratulated on graduation was Thomas Burkett, who was unable to attend the meeting.
The students did not meet the qualifications they needed to graduate last June, but thanks to the help of Assistant Principal Paula Missana and the credit recovery program at the school they can now count themselves as members of the Class of 2014.
Credit Recovery classes are usually shorter in length than a normal class and can be completed online, in person or through independent study. The program helps students get back on track and receive credit for their mastery of the subject after struggling with the coursework initially.
Missana said she worked very closely with the students. "They are very special and worked very hard to achieve this goal. We are very proud of them."
