Fairtrade flavors and fun lead the festivities for annual "thanks" to fans

Is there a better way to say thank you than free ice cream? Not if you're Ben & Jerry's! On Tuesday, April 9, from noon until 8 p.m. the Ben & Jerry's scoop shop at 1994 Military Road (Fashion Outlets of Niagara), Niagara Falls, will host the 34th annual "Free Cone Day." Since its first anniversary in 1979, Ben & Jerry's has thrown open the scoop shop doors and invited fans of all ages in for a free cup or cone. The annual celebration is a way for the company to celebrate and say thank you for another year of support.

If a delicious, euphoric scoop isn't enough reason to stop by the shop, you can feel good that the ice cream you're enjoying on "Free Cone Day" is doing good. Ben & Jerry's has committed to transitioning all of its ice cream over to Fairtrade-certified by year-end 2013. Many of the flavors that will be served on "Free Cone Day" have already met that deadline; the rest will by this summer.

And did we mention new flavors? Fans can try some of the newest additions to the flavor lineup, including: "Liz Lemon": lemon Greek frozen yogurt with a blueberry lavender swirl; or "Candy Bar Pie": peanut butter ice cream with fudge flakes, chocolate nougat and sweet and salty pretzel swirls.

" 'Free Cone Day' is one of the most exciting days at Ben & Jerry's," said John Breier, owner/operator of the Niagara Falls scoop shop. "Every year we're amazed at the number of people that come out to 'Free Cone Day' and to be able to show our appreciation for the fans in a tangible way is really special. We're always happy to put a smile on our fans' faces with a free scoop of one of our iconic flavors or one of our brand new ones."

This year, the Ben & Jerry's scoop shop in Niagara Falls has partnered with Opportunity Unlimited. The number of smiles and the overwhelming response from Ben & Jerry's fans is a perfect exemplification of the company's two founding principles: "business has a responsibility to give back to the community" and "if it's not fun, why do it?"
