Old Fort Niagara is looking for outgoing individuals who enjoy history to serve as volunteer tour guides for the 2013 season. Tour guides lead groups of school students through the 287-year-old historic site on a year-round basis and offer orientation tours for the general public from May through October.

The fort's annual docent training will take place on April 9, 10 and 13. Volunteers can expect a thorough course that covers the fort's long history, as well as coaching in techniques that make guided tours dynamic and interesting for a variety of age groups.

One of the program presenters will be Toby Jewett of Youngstown, who has served as a volunteer docent since 2002. Jewett is a retired biology teacher who enjoys sharing the region's history with students and general public alike.

"Guiding tours at the fort is a great experience" Jewett said. "You get to meet fascinating people from all over the world and share the region's exciting history. It's a great way to explore the past while making a difference in people's lives."

Those interested in becoming docents at Old Fort Niagara are asked to call Brian McDonald, volunteer and tour coordinator, at 716-745-7611, ext. 229, to register for the training sessions.
