Niagara Hospice Director Kay Dekker, RN, BSN, has announced volunteer training dates for individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of nursing home residents receiving hospice care.

"We are looking for men, women and teens who want to make a difference in the lives of Hospice at Jeanne's House residents as they make their final journey," said Dekker.

Hospice at Jeanne's House is a collaboration between Niagara Hospice and The McGuire Group's Northgate Health Care Facility. It is a unique unit designed specifically for residents receiving hospice care in a long-term care setting. The newly renovated 22-bed unit, affectionately named "Hospice at Jeanne's House" after a beloved Northgate employee who utilized Hospice services herself, is devoted to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill residents requiring both 24-hour skilled nursing care and the unique services that Niagara Hospice provides.

Volunteers are especially needed to visit with residents and provide music and pet visits. Dekker states that the music and pet visits have been a huge success with area hospice patients, and more pet owners and musicians are needed for Jeanne's House. Volunteers are also needed to read to residents and help with arts, crafts and other activities.

A Hospice at Jeanne's House volunteer training session is scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 6 and 7 at Northgate Health Care Facility, 7264 Nash Road in Wheatfield. Anyone interested in registering for the training should call Niagara Hospice at 716-439-4417 by Feb. 5. Attendance both evenings is required.
